WOW WOW WOW
The sound quality from this Sony player is outstanding, its puts the Apple to shame. Battery life is also fantastic, and it feels solidly built. In my opinion the Sony Walkman far out strips the ipod nano. I am now a total Sony Walkman convert, Apple ipod, no more.

Excellent sound quality
This S765 provides some of the best quality music playback I've come across in the mobile MP3 player market. Sampling a wide range of genres I like a player that offers rich, inviting music. Tracks from Daft Punk through classical and more pop offerings like Katy Perry, the Sony doesn't disappoint. All I can say that the S765 combined with the supplied earphones provide for excellent playback quality.
The video is a little more complex. First the screen is tiny when compared against tablet / iTouch alternatives. Though the Sony software (media go) does a great job of transcoding your videos to that accepted by the player. The videos I placed on the Sony played back without skipping. The screen is bright and there is no sign of ghosting. Colours are as accurate as they are on my Macbook Pro. I would say the media go software is Windows only so mac users might be frustrated. If you want to catch up with the odd episode of Gadget show on the way to work - it'll be passable - watching a movie is not recommended at all, but this is all due to the screen size. If video is your thing, and you want the sound quality - look into the A series by Sony.
Battery life is excellent 20hrs+ for audio playback. The construction quality is high, but has declined since earlier models that Sony offered. The front feels like plastic and the rear is metallic. That said this is a tough MP3 player and well built.
** and on the big volume debate **
Many feel the volume level of the Sony Walkman series of Mp3 players is too low, this is apparently due to EU regulations. However I would say that the Max volume is about 85 - 90 % the same as comparable devices. If you play your music at max on an Ipod, you will want to check out the s765 before you buy. If you playback your tunes at around 50-80% of the max level on your current device the Sony will be fine. The significant caveat is that this unit will not power over head earphones easily - I tried this with one of Sony's own monitor phones (MDR-V150's) and it was difficult to get it to a volume level I'd be happy with, say on a transatlantic flight. My opinion would be to couple this player with earbuds rather than over ear alternatives.
Summary: excellent audio quality, good build quality, screen to small for longer video viewing, if you want apps get an iPod
