  • Inspired by a true story, director Wayne Blair's debut feature The Sapphires follows four aboriginal Australian girls as they are transformed into a soulful singing group by a kind-hearted talent scout, and later travel to Vietnam to entertain battle-weary U.S. troops. Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Kay (Shari Sebbens) were four singers with lots of passion, but precious little talent. Recognising something special in the way the girls' sing, kindly talent scout Dave (Chris O'Dowd) offers to shape them into a Motown-inspired soul group and get them out on the road. But when their first gig turns out to be on the front lines of Vietnam - where death has become part of the daily routine - the ambitious young singers realize they've got their work cut out for them. • Perennially at the top of every all-time-greats list, and indisputably one of the landmarks of cinema. Bogart is Rick Blaine, an American expatriate and war profiteer in WW II Morocco. He's content to merely run the Cafe Americain until love in the form of a Ilsa, the luminous Bergman, returns to his life after breaking his heart years before. Ilsa's husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) is the Czech Resistance leader whose only hope of safe transport, and Ilsa's, from Morocco is Rick Blaine. Ilsa offers herself as a bargaining tool to encourage Rick to transport her husband, but he must choose between his own happiness and the lives of others. An accidental Hollywood masterpiece, this spine-tingling tear jerker just gets better and better - as time goes by. DVD.

  • Three screen goddesses Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe star as golddigging models blessed with fabulous looks but limited brain power. The three blondes pool their resources and conspire to nab millionaire husbands, renting an expensive penthouse to lure in their likely prey. But with Rory Calhoun, Cameron Mitchell, David Wayne, Fred Clark, Alex D'Arcy, and William Powell playing the desired millionaires, the gals are pushed to the end of their wits as they try to decide whom to wed. Basing his work on two successful stage plays, famed producer and screenwriter Nunnally Johnson's dialogue is fabulous, and scenic views of Manhattan exploit the Cinema Scope widescreen aesthetic. Director Jean Negulesco keeps the antics of the remarkable ensemble cast hyped to an outrageous level, which combines perfectly with both the script and the music to create exceptionally entertaining and classic camp. This film is a must-see for fans of Marilyn Monroe, who again asserts the brilliance of her comedic timing as the extremely myopic Pola, a woman who refuses to wear glasses because she fears that they ruin her looks.
