First, he set them to lengthy classical music pieces, and then he boldly experimented with different forms of animation, sometimes jettisoning any sort of narrative altogether. The result is a sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening, but always beautiful movie going experience. A box-office failure when first released, it's now considered a timeless treasure. Highlights include: Mickey Mouse in ''The Sorcerer's Apprentice,'' the leaping hippos and alligators in ''Dance of the Hours,'' the rise and fall of the dinosaurs set to Stravinsky's ''Rite of Spring,'' the dancing mushrooms of Tchaikovsky's ''Nutcracker Suite,'' and Mussorgsky's ''Night on Bald Mountain,'' with its fearsome winged demon raging at the heavens. One of Walt Disney's ambitions for the project was to re-release the film periodically over the years with new sequences. Though the film was regularly re-released, it wasn't until 1999 that his intention was finally realized with the premiere of Fantasia 2000, a lavish follow-up that included a digitally restored ''Sorcerer's Apprentice'' and a host of new material. The original Fantasia, however, remains a one-of-a-kind auditory and visual experience that is still, in many ways, far ahead of its time.

' Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) is the daughter of Algonquin chief Powhatan (Russell Means), who promises her in marriage to Kocoum, a brave whom she doesn't love. Pocahontas would rather wander in the forest, communing with nature and her animal pals, Meeko, a raccoon, and the hummingbird Flit. When European settlers arrive, she becomes enamored of handsome John Smith (Mel Gibson). Their attraction is encouraged by Grandmother Willow (Linda Hunt), a talking tree. The situation between their peoples is tense, however, as the settlers, LED by Governor Ratcliffe (David Ogden Stiers) desperately want the gold that they're sure the natives are concealing. When a dutiful sentry, Thomas (Christian Bale) follows Smith into the woods on one of his secret meetings with Pocahontas, a tragic mistake leads both groups to the brink of war. Deceptively simple, beautiful, moving and hilarious, DUMBO is often overlooked when considering Disney's greatest films because perhaps of its lack of extravagance, its brief running time, and its simple story. Baby elephant Jumbo Jr. is delivered by the stork to his elephant mother with much fanfare but soon receives a cold shoulder from the snobby female pachyderms and the rest or the circus due to the size of his ears. When his mother goes on a rampage in order to protect him from those snickering rudes, she winds up locked away. Dumbo is left without a friend in the world until street-smart Timothy Mouse decides to become his manager and a telephone line full of delightful jive-talking crows convince him he can fly. Highlights include Dumbo accidently getting drunk and experiencing the surreal musical sequence - Pink Elephants on Parade and a soundtrack packed with such priceless songs as the Oscar-winning Baby Mine and the crow's soulful number, When I See An Elephant Fly. There's never an imperfect moment to be found in this raucous, tender, sublime, film which has been delighting audiences for generations. 1 disc. Cert: U.
